Search Engine friendly

The primary function of search engines such as Google, is to deliver relevant content to users. However, the main reason companies hesitate to use a Content Management System (CMS) such as Toucan HyperEdit is because they think a CMS-driven site will not perform well with search engines.

The good news is, Toucan HyperEdit can actually help you to score points with the search engines, thus helping to bring customers to your site.

Of course, your content is always paramount, however, one of the secrets to high ranking on the search engines is to encourage links from external sites to your web site. Keeping your site relevant and up-to-date will make other sites consider you worth linking to. HyperEdit enables you to easily keep your site content fresh. In addition the following technical considerations can also help.

Toucan HyperEdit 3 can help you gain top rankings with search engines:

First, there is the issue of dynamic URLs. Most CMS's will generate URLs with parameters embedded into them. As an example, each article on your site may look like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/anysubject/category_index.php?id=4

Not only does this look ugly, the search engines probably won't spider (index) such an address.

HyperEdit creates search engine friendly addresses for all the pages in your site for example:

http://www.yoursite.com/anysubject

Or to use a real-world example:
http://www.toucan.biz/products/hyperedit

You also need to optimise and position your content. Generally having the navigation links at the bottom or on the right side of your page allow you to position your optimised content towards the beginning of your html page. This is good for search engines, but your site visitors are accustomed to look for a navigation menu towards the top left of the page.

HyperEdit can accommodate either style without it affecting your actual content. But if you decide to go with a traditional layout you need to make certain that your links are well optimised with your keywords. It might not be obvious, but attention to the anchor text used in the navigation links is important because these links will appear on all the pages of your site. If you can, try to have at least one of your important keywords in the link that leads to your main page. I.e. Instead of using "Home" use "Your-Keywords" in the link back to your main page. Simple devices like this can have a big impact on the search engine ranking of your main page.

When you add content to your HyperEdit, you give each page a subject, a page title and join it to the rest of the site in the most appropriate place. HyperEdit will automatically create links in the chosen parent page. If you define your subjects and titles appropriately you can create a brilliant linking strategy. Since your main page links to your page by main subject and since each main subject page contains links to the articles for that subject it creates a three level sitemap for the search engine spider to follow. Since each article will have a link back to the main page and to the related subject, you can establish sections of specific subjects which are looked on favourably by search engines.

Ordinarily you would have to manually create all the links every time you added an article, but with HyperEdit it all happens automatically.

Of course you need to give careful attention to your site structure and contents, but if you do (and we can help you with this) HyperEdit can actually help you to gain top search engine rankings.
